History of Daytona Bike Week

First, in 1937, there was the Daytona 200. Back then, it was referred to as the Handlebar Derby. And this was a motorcycle race on the beach. Notably, Ed Kretz, on his Indian motorcycle, was the first winner.

Due to WWII, the Daytona Beach 200 was paused from 1942 to 1947. But the Bike Week still happened during these years.

Then, in 1947, the Daytona motorcycle race resumed. In 1948, a new beach was used for the motorcycle road course. Next, in 1961, the races during Daytona Bike Week moved to the International Speedway.

Fast forward, and Bike Week Daytona has become one of the largest motorcycle rallies.

Motorcycle Laws in Daytona Beach & Florida

Below are the motorcycle laws to know when going to Bike Week.

Florida Motorcycle Helmet Laws – In Daytona Beach or anywhere in Florida, here are the motorcycle helmet laws:

-1- You do not have to wear a helmet if you are over 21. But you must have $10,000 in medical benefits while riding your bike.

-2- Riders and passengers under 21 must always wear helmets when operating or riding a motorcycle.

Daytona Noise Ordinances – In all of Florida, excessive noise is illegal. But you will find that the closer you are to Bike Week, the more it is enforced.

Bike Week Parking – Yes, there are Daytona streets with motorcycle-only parking. Also, there are standard parking spots along roads, in parking lots, venues, etc. But, just like when the Daytona motorcycle rally isn’t happening, you can’t park in resident and business reserved parking.

Eye Protection – In Daytona and all of Florida, you must wear eye protection when riding a motorcycle.

Headphones & Headsets – It is illegal in Florida to wear headphones, headsets, or other listening devices while riding.

Motorcycle Handlebar Height Limits – Having bars above the rider’s shoulders is illegal. The height is determined when the rider is seated correctly. During Daytona Bike Week, this is frequently enforced.

Headlights – Your bike must have at least one headlight, but not more than two. Also, they must be always on.

Brake Light – A motorcycle brake light is required in Florida. If you are taking a trailer, double-check the brake lights are working.

Note this poses some issues for baggers. And this is because some have three headlights or fog lights on the crash bars.

Motorcycle Taillight – A taillight is required in Florida.

Turn Signals – All motorized vehicles must have turn signals. Note, if you are trailering your bike, check the turn signals are working.

Motorcycle Horns – If you’re going to Daytona Bike Week or anywhere in Florida, you need a horn. And the standard is the horn must be audible from at least 200 feet away.

Mirrors – All motorized vehicles must have a mirror.

Motorcycle Seats – Both the rider and passengers on bikes must have seats. And the seat must be “permanently” attached. I’m unsure how “lick and stick”/suction cup pad seats work.

Reflectors – When traveling anywhere in Florida to get to Bike Week in Daytona, you will need one red rear reflector.

Holding Items While Riding – Both hands must be on the handlebars in Florida.

Motorcycle Lane Splitting – You can’t lane split while getting to Daytona Bike Week or riding anywhere in Florida.

Lane Sharing – You can ride “two abreast”/side-by-side in Florida on your bike.

Racing & Exhibition of Speed – As you can guess, you can’t drag a race at any time in Florida or Daytona Beach. Also, an exhibition of speed in Florida is illegal.

Motorcycle Stunts – Again, you can’t do stunts, including wheelies.
