|Description||Subject: Alabama-Tennessee Trail of Tears Corridor Association, Inc., Under New Leadership / Official 14th Annual “Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride ®” will follow the Drane/Hood Overland Route of the Trail of Tears, from Ross’ Landing in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Waterloo, Alabama on Saturday September 15, 2007.
The Indian Removal Act of 1830 called for the Indians in the eastern United States to move to Oklahoma. Soldiers forced many of the tribes of the Southeast out of their homes in a removal of American Indians that became known as the “Trail of Tears.”
Cherokee men, women and children were placed in concentration camps where they were treated harshly, rarely fed and exposed to disease. Many died. Due to a drought that left the Tennessee River too low to navigate in June of 1838, the government hired wagon master J. C. S. Hood to carry 1,040 Cherokees, by foot and wagon, from Ross’ Landing in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Waterloo, Alabama. Much of the 230-mile journey followed what is now U.S. Highway 72. This is the Drane/Hood overland route of the Trail of Tears that is the official route of the Trail of Tears Commemoration and Motorcycle Ride ®.
