ROT Rally General Info
The 2017 ROT (Republic of Texas) Rally is the second largest of the Texas biker rallies; the first is the Lone Star Rally in Galveston. The ROT Rally on the 2017 Lightning Customs' Major Motorcycle Rallies
ROT’s official location is at the Travis County Expo Center, which is about fifteen miles east of downtown Austin. The number of attendees that pay to enter the Expo Center is about 25,000; placing it in the top 25 largest motorcycle rallies in the US (the top ten motorcycle events all have 100,000 attendees). The total number of attendees in the area is over 100,000. So why do so many people choose to not go to the official location of the biker rally?
The first reason is that the Austin area and downtown provides a lot of cool things to do. There is a lot of riding in the Hill Country and four out of five doors in downtown Austin are bars or clubs. Most all of these things are free to do and the entrance to ROT is around $75. The cost of a beer or even bottled water at official Republic of Texas location is really expensive at $5 plus/beer.
Another reason is the Austin weather during the middle of the summer is normally really hot. It is not unusual at all for the highs to be in the mid-90s if not in the 100s in July. When you add to the heat, the humidity and that the majority of the Expo Center is unpaved and there is not a lot of covered areas, it makes catching some wind or hanging out at a bar or watering hole a lot more appealing.
Austin’s and ROT Rally’s Attractions
One of the big attractions is the riding in the Austin area. The area is referred to as the Hill Country and it has lots of rolling hills to enjoy as well as the riding around Lake Travis and Town Lake (aka Lake Austin or Lady Bird Lake). Downtown Austin is an awesome place to party. During the Republic of Texas Rally weekend, about 50 blocks are barricaded for motorcycle-only parking. Austin is often referred to as the Live Music Capital of the World, so there will be a lot of bands playing wherever there is room. Downtown Austin always has drink specials and it is easy to find $2 beers downtown.
If the heat does not bother you and you want to party, the ROT Rally has a pretty wild camping area. That being said, whether you want to stay for part of a day or the entire weekend, the entrance is $75 as they don’t offer day passes.
Additional attractions at the 2017 ROT will be nationally recognized bands, bike shows, stunt shows, parade to downtown, and vendors. Although the number of vendors has gone up a lot in the last ten years, attendees and vendors note that the increase in vendors has not been matched by an increase in attendance. They also note that a lot of the larger vendors have stopped going because the increase in smaller vendors has eroded their revenue. Then you add in the cost for booth space and the heat, and a lot of the larger vendors have decided to skip Austin’s Republic of Texas Rally.
