|Description||Heroes and Cool Kids is a not-for-profit mentoring program where professional athletes train high school students to present drug and alcohol prevention programs to fifth and sixth graders. The program was cofounded by Bruce Harper, former New York Jet, and began operating during the 1998 – 1999 school year in three different school districts. |
To date, we are implementing the program in 62 school districts across the state of New Jersey and New York. With the past and current support we have been given by Vonage, United Water Company, NFL Charities, Bergen Community College and TD Bank, we anticipate Heroes and Cool Kids to expand to include at least 70 school districts next year. Unfortunately, there are many districts that do not have a sponsor, and the only way to provide the students in those districts with our program is to seek additional funding.
We will be hosting a motorcycle run, “Bikers Against Bullying” on May 31, 2014 at Vonage Headquarters in Holmdel, N.J. The rain date will be June 7. The day will also include food trucks, bands and other activities.
We have invited many sports legends who have supported our program over the years to join us for the day and are very excited to say that we have already received confirmations of attendance from Gerry Cooney, Harry Carson, Joe Klecko, Amani Toomer, Willie Randolph, John Starks and several other high profile professional athletes. The presence of these athletes, as well as the popularity of Heroes and Cool Kids, will ensure a great deal of positive exposure for the sponsors of this event.
