|Description||A Convoy travels the full length of I-205 the Sunday before Veterans Day each year to kick off the holiday observance to honor all veterans and raise awareness of the highway named in their honor. The convoy forms at the Clark County Fairgrounds where we will
mass vehicles of all types and only ask participants to fly the American flag with headlights on during the journey. |
This event is open to the public, you do not need to be a veteran to show your patriotism and join this salute to veterans. It is not a race; we travel all in one line the entire journey in true Convoy fashion. Our goal is before the last vehicle leaves to have the first vehicle arrive at the end so the Convoy actually stretches the full length of Veterans Memorial Highway (37 miles) at one time.
Grand Marshals will be the families of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans deployed from the Oregon and Washington who lost their lives in the Gulf war, followed by families of remaining deployed veterans and those who have already returned. Gates open at 7am, various bands and Native American flutes/drums beginning at 8am, ceremonies at 11am and the Convoy departs at noon in single file. There is a FREE Salmon bake open to the public and welcoming ceremony on arrival in Wilsonville.
We invite cycles, cars; trucks, vans, RVs by any individual, organization, club and civic group to participate. There is no entry fee to participate. All groups and organizations are invited to post their colors at both ceremonies. Bring your family and come be a part of History! We encourage all citizens of the community who can’t participate to line the overpasses along the highway and wave as the Convoy passes each area in both states.
OPTIONAL: We invite you to donate a new toy for children of deployed veterans that will be distributed to their families for Christmas. Restricted concessions and souvenirs will be available. For more information call or visit the Veterans of Oregon website.
We will be presenting Oregon Honorable Service Medals to any veteran who has served honorably, alive or deceased (or still serving) in the Armed Forces of the United States at the Wilsonville ceremony.
Registration requirements are available on-line at www.veteransoforegon.com along with instructions on how to register by phone. Proof of honorable service is required. Please bring this along with the application to the convoy to register in person between 7am and noon at the Fairgrounds.
We invite everyone to join us help thank every veteran past and present for their service. Bring you family and camera for this very photogenic opportunity and celebration.
To receive a medal, applicants must pre-register at the Fairgrounds in Vancouver or by phone in advance. The Medal ceremony is in Wilsonville.
