|Description||To Hell You Ride!
The excitement started to build the morning of Friday, May 19th as local residents promenaded down Main Street in Baker City, Oregon looking some action. Abel Martinez, self-appointed local rally organizer, created excitement as he revved up his Harley, gathering his posse to cruise the streets of Baker City. As the afternoon wore on, his entourage grew, as did the community awareness that THIS was going to be something big!
Rally organizers Steve and Eric Folkestad ride the nationally recognized Hells Canyon Scenic byway route for the past seven years. Early this year, the Folkestad Brothers added a new twist by promoting the rally on their website, www.hellscanyonrally.com. This simple marketing effort called nearly 1,000 riders from all over the northwestern states, California, and Arizona to register for the rally. It also created enough buzz to add another 1,000 motorcyclists who came along for the ride.
The All American Hells Canyon road led riders through some awesome twists and turns through the deepest canyon in North America. The canyon’s rugged lichen-covered basalt rock created the perfect backdrop for the bright green spring grass and blue skies. The kiss of snow on the mountains and views of the Snake River added to the beauty of the dramatic ride.
The main events for the rally were held on Main Street in historic downtown Baker City. Baker City is about an hours ride West of Boise, Idaho close to the Eastern Oregon border. Known as Queen City of the Mines, Baker City is blessed with wide streets and gorgeous architecture. By Saturday night, all the riders had settled in town for an evening of eating, drinking, and judging contests of Miss Hells Canyon and bikes of all makes and models. Riders raved about the kindness of the people they met in Baker County and great rides they had.
You can catch a glimpse of the ride if you go online and pick up a documentary that the Brothers are selling for $20.00. The DVD will show over an hour of action shots, scenic rides, world-class bike show, and interviews from the 2006 Hells Canyon Motorcycle Rally.
Next years rally will likely double in size as the word gets out that the Folkestad Brothers have found the perfect alchemy for a great ride that is well worth the trip. Look for pictures on their website and details about the next rally scheduled for late May or early June. The date is still pending. As soon as it is published, get your lodging arrangements squared away, as this year, lodgers all over the county were full up well before the bikes hit the streets.
