|Description||In 2006 a few of us moms who lost our teens to suicide got together to reach out to help others learn about the warning signs, its causes and most of all prevention. We started a “grassroots” suicide awareness walk “Here Comes the Sun” at a local high school in Wappingers Falls, NY. Our conception has now evolved into bringing a much needed chapter of The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to our area. Our new Hudson Valley Chapter will cover six counties; Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan, Putnam and Rockland.
Our Spring Fundraiser will be held in Orange County NY –

The bike run will promote suicide awareness in the community – information, speakers and open mic will be available. Funds raised during this event will be used in our communities as well as support the National level for research, training and educational information. With the help of donations we can support local programs to be used at high schools and colleges, educate our communities and help train people to help those suffering a recent loss.
Even though suicide is a national crisis, many people are not aware that the facts about suicide are staggering...Over 32,000 people in the U.S. take their own lives every year..Suicide is: 4th leading cause of death for ages 18 to 65 years; 2nd leading cause of death for college students; Every day, approx 80 Americans take their own life, and 1,500 more attempt to do so. Help our community take the stigma out of suicide and depression so that more will seek the help they need.
Visit www.afsp.org for more information on the foundation.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide.
