Republic of Texas Biker Rally
June 9-12, 2016
ROT Rally General Info
The 2016 Republic of Texas Biker Rally, which is more often than not referred to as the ROT Rally, is held in Austin, TX. It is one of the largest Texas biker rallies (the largest is the Lone Star Rally
in Galveston) and with some 45,000 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts hitting the official rally grounds at the Travis County Expo Center, it is on the 2016 Lightning Customs' Major Biker Rallies
The Expo Center and downtown Austin are about twenty-five miles apart and the weather can be vastly different. This is especially the case with the rain and wind; it can be torrential at the Expo Center and not that bad in downtown Austin. The average high in Austin during ROT is in the 90s, but it is common for it to get over 100 degrees (in 2011 there was a record of ninety days over 100 degrees). So, no matter where a person is, it is important to drink lots of water.
Second, it is hot as hell on the blacktop. Since the Expo Center is mostly blacktop and dirt, it is one the reasons why so many riders come to catch some breeze and hangout at the bars and pubs, rather than going to the Expo Center.
Area and ROT Rally Attractions
There are about 200,000 attendees between the official ROT Rally grounds and in the Austin area, but only 45,000 go to the Expo. Why such a big discrepancy? It is not just the heat, but also because there is so much to do in Austin without attending ROT, which is great. One thing to enjoy is the riding through the lush Hill Country, but do watch out for the deer especially in the afternoon.
Another huge attraction during the biker rally is enjoying Austin’s downtown. On the main party block of 6th Street, four out of five doors are bars, taverns or restaurants and since Austin is considered by many as the "Live Music Capital" there are bands playing everywhere downtown.
Additional reasons why so many people skip the official ROT grounds is that the cost will be around $75, whether you want stay for part of a day or the entire weekend. Also, to buy a beer it is around $6. So if you decide to go to the Expo Center, BYOB beer and definitely lots of water. A number of larger vendors decided to opt out because the increase in the number of vendors has not been matched by the dollars spent.
Some of the highlights at the official ROT grounds at the Expo Center include the biker party at the camping and RV areas long into the morning. There are also big name bands (Lynyrd Skynrd played in 2015), ride-in bike show and vendors.
